High Patient Satisfaction Scores at all CHS Facilities

Patient Satisfaction measures our patients’ opinion of the quality of customer service we provide to our patients and their family members/visitors during their stay with us. There are many important factors that contribute to the patient experience. Our patient satisfaction survey is designed to measure these factors in detail so we can ensure that all of your needs are being met during your stay with us.

Last month, all of our Catholic Health Services facilities achieved a rating of 95% or higher. The ratings were based on overall satisfaction, recommending the facility to others and returning to the facility.

Some of the comments from our patients: therapists were all good and caring, if she ever needed therapy again, this is where she would go. Excellent care! Very professional. Clean! Received excellent care at the facility.

We are very proud of our staff who continue to provide quality care and quality service.

What is Rehabilitation?

A major illness or injury can leave a person limited in his or her ability to function independently. The simplest tasks may seem like impossible tasks. Rehabilitation is a process that assists patients in learning to take care of themselves again and in achieving the most satisfactory lifestyle possible.

What is a Rehabilitation Hospital?

A Rehab Hospital is an acute care hospital licensed by the State. An acute care hospital is a place that takes care of people with a serious illness or injury for a short period of time. As a rehab patient, you can expect a minimum of three (3) hours of therapy per day at least 5 days a week, including physical therapy, occupational therapy and/or speech and language pathology. In addition, you may receive the services of a psychologist, neuropsychologist, social worker and/or dietician. You will also be provided 24-hour rehab nursing services. While you may receive many of the same services in another setting, such as sub-acute or skilled nursing, an acute rehabilitation hospital offers more intense coordinated, interdisciplinary services in order to help you recover more rapidly and increase the likelihood that you can return home.

Who can benefit from Rehabilitation?

Generally, a major illness can leave a patient weak and frail. Certainly rehabilitation, including proper nutrition, can help the person regain his or her strength. In other cases, such as injury or stroke, patients and families will develop strategies to make them better able to handle the daily responsibilities of their lives. The Admissions department of our hospitals will give you clear guidelines as to the type of patient that would most benefit.

What is the admissions procedure?
Patients come to us directly or through a variety of referrals, including physicians, health care professionals, insurance companies and community agencies. Before admission, an evaluation is performed to assess:

  • Diagnosis
  • Medical Condition
  • Endurance/Tolerance for activity
  • Cognition/Ability to participate
  • Motivation/Willingness to improve

Once we receive the appropriate medical information, evaluate the patient, review insurance and/or consult with the patient’s physicians, we determine if one of our Rehabilitation Hospital is the most appropriate setting for the patient.

What does rehabilitation entail?

What does rehabilitation entail?
Rehabilitation is a custom-designed program for the patient that involves a team of professionals who will see to it that you receive proper training, exercise and practice. Of course, successful rehabilitation requires a great amount of understanding and support from family and friends. That is why we encourage family to become actively involved in the rehabilitation process.

How long does rehabilitation take?

No two people heal or learn at the same pace. How long one can expect to stay in the rehab hospital depends on the individual person and how well they are progressing. Generally, patients remain in rehab for as long as there is reasonable progress being made in several areas of functional ability. If the patient has reached maximum potential or if continued progress can be managed in an outpatient or home setting, discharge arrangements will be made. Patients with orthopedic diagnoses frequently progress well in 7 to 10 days, often continuing therapy at home or as an outpatient for several weeks. Some patients may require a longer stay before being discharged.

How long can I expect to stay in the hospital?

The answer to this question depends on many things, including your prior and current condition, your living situation, and your ability to participate in the programs. Some patients are able to go home in just a few days, others may require a few weeks. Overall, the length of stay for patients generally ranges between 10-20 days.

Will I have a private room?

Most rooms are private. A few semi-private rooms are available for those patients who enjoy having company.

When can my family visit?

Your family is welcome during posted visiting hours; however, it is generally best for them to visit after 5:00pm. Remember, you will be very busy during the day having your rehabilitation treatments. The therapists will invite your family to participate in rehabilitation on certain days so your family can learn what they need to know when you go home.

How often will I see my physician?

You will be seen by a physician daily. The physicians are on-site, full time physicians who are readily available during the day, every day. They are available by phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our physicians are able to respond quickly to urgent or emergent needs. This daily contract allows rapid access to labs, x-rays, etc. and fast adjustments to pharmacological therapies.

What is a team conference?

The success of rehabilitation depends on the expertise of several professionals. To coordinate a customized rehabilitation program, a interdisciplinary team consisting of the patient’s physician, rehab nurse, therapists, psychologists, social worker and dietician meet each week, and whenever necessary, to discuss your progress, update the treatment plan and prepare discharge plans.

What can be done to help the patient?

Whether you’re family or a friend, we know you try to be supportive when someone you care about is ill or injured. Often it is difficult to just stand by and watch this person struggle to do very simple tasks. The urge is to take over and do for the person. However, when you take over too quickly, you do not allow the person the chance to master the most basic of daily tasks. Understand that a great deal of our own self worth comes from our ability to maintain our dignity, if not our actual independence. The person you care about is struggling to master skills such as eating, personal hygiene and dressing sees these skills as measures of his or her self worth. Be supportive, ask before you take over and encourage your loved one to try again. Speed is not the goal. Progress is.

Aquatic Center:

St. Catherine’s Rehabilitation Hospital has an Aquatic Center on campus. A temperature controlled indoor swimming pool provides both inpatients and outpatients the ability to engage in therapeutic aquatic exercises.

Bioness:

Bioness is state-of-the-art technology that utilizes electrical stimulation during functional activities of the arm and/or leg to promote
faster recovery after a neurological injury such as a stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, or multiple sclerosis. The devices are used during
activities such as grasping with the hand or walking and research has shown that the devices speed and enhance recovery of motor function
in patients with new or chronic neurologic disease. Please visit www.bioness.com to learn more about this exciting new technology.

Balance System SD:

Using this unique device, clinicians can assess neuromuscular control by quantifying the patient’s ability to maintain dynamic postural stability on a static or unstable surface. There are four test protocols including fall risk, athletic single leg stability, limits of stability and postural stability. The Balance System SD also serves as a valuable training device to enhance sensory abilities that may provide some degree of compensation for impaired reflex mechanisms following injury.

SaeboFlex:

The SaeboFlex will allow patients to immediately begin using their hand functionally in therapy and at home. Even individuals with longstanding neurological injury may benefit from the SaeboFlex. In addition, the ability to use the hand in therapy or at home has been reported as extremely motivating during the recovery process. Please visit http://www.saebo.com/seaboflex.html to find SaeboFlex trained therapists in our facilities.

Partial Body Weight Supported Gait Training:

Using this device, therapists can begin early ambulation (walking) in patients who are not able to support themselves on their legs. Specifically, the device allows therapists to begin gait training very early in patients who have suffered neurological or orthopedic injury. Scientific evidence supports the use of this device in retraining the brain when patients are relearning use of the legs. There is strong evidence linking early rehabilitation in this type of device and subsequently improved ambulation (walking). The device can be used over a treadmill or over land.

Applications Include:

  • Stroke
  • Spinal Cord
  • Head/Brain Injury
  • Amputees
  • Orthopedic
  • Neurologic
  • Vestibular
  • Older Adult Patients

Orthopedic

Orthopedic Rehab

Our history of positive outcomes has always met or exceeded medical expectations!

Catholic Health Services’ specialized Rehabilitation Hospital and programs are designed to meet the rehabilitation needs of disabled and elderly patients who have a broad range of acute or chronic illnesses that cause temporary or permanent disability.

Orthopedic rehabilitation is a form of physical therapy that treats a large variety of conditions that affect the skeletal system and the muscular system. Physical therapy is administered through one-on-one care between the therapist and patient, to better fit the patient’s specific needs. Physical therapists are trained to treat the entire body, and the length of physical therapy needed depends greatly on the severity of the patient’s injuries.

Injuries such as neck and back pain, or shoulder tendinitis, can be treated with orthopedic rehabilitation, along with carpal tunnel syndrome, knee and ankle sprains and hip pains. Orthopedic rehabilitation is often needed post surgery to aid in the healing process for patients who have had a spinal fusion, total hip or knee replacement, and ankle reconstructions. Other conditions that may require surgery in conjunction with orthopedic rehabilitation are complete shoulder replacements, laminectomies, rotator cuff repairs, and meniscectomies.

A physical therapist will evaluate the patient during the first initial office visit to determine the patient’s range of motion, his posture, and how much he or she can function when moving. The therapist will discuss the levels of pain the patient may be experiencing, along with how much strength is present around the injured area. After the evaluation, the therapist will develop a personalized treatment plan based on the patient’s specific needs, and the patient will then go through orthopedic rehabilitation.

On average, therapy sessions generally last 30-60 minutes. These sessions may include stretching, manual therapy and exercises, as well as educating the patient on his condition. Having one-on-one sessions with a therapist helps the patient to gain a better knowledge of his injury, and to develop a greater relationship with his therapist. The therapy sessions run smoothly when a therapist only has to focus on one person at a time, giving the patient the ability to focus more on himself, resulting in a quicker healing time. The patient is usually taught techniques to use at home to self-manage his symptoms through the therapy process as well.

Orthopedic rehabilitation may or may not be painful. This will depend on the injury that is being treated. Sometimes orthopedic rehabilitation can begin as a painful process, but as the patient becomes stronger, the pain lessens or disappears altogether. Once it is determined that therapy is no longer needed, it is the physical therapist’s responsibility to make sure the patient is properly educated on the injury and is sent home with self-management care information. The patient is then able to continue taking care of himself at home to avoid any setbacks or becoming injured again.

Stroke Rehabilitation

Stroke Rehabilitation

St. Anthony’s and St. Catherine’s Rehabilitation Hospitals provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient programs for those suffering from stroke. A catastrophic injury such as stroke often leaves individuals with impairments; however, using specialized evidence-based medical rehabilitation interventions, most patients regain lost function and learn or improve skills that can compensate for lost abilities. Our staff is committed to the improvement of each patient, which is why our history of positive outcomes has greatly exceeded national averages for years.

The Stroke Rehabilitation Teams at St. Anthony’s and St. Catherine’s Hospitals work with one important goal in mind: to design individualized interdisciplinary programs that help each patient achieve a maximum level of functional independence in order to return home and resume their daily lives. Our rehabilitation hospitals are state of the art medical facilities designed for patients who are medically stable and can benefit from intensive interdisciplinary rehabilitation in a hospital setting. We feature modern equipment and biomedically advanced devices such as Bioness™, Biodex™, and on-site aquatic centers.

The success of rehabilitation depends on the expertise of specialized health care professionals, dedicated to your continued improvement, and who coordinate a customized rehabilitation program specifically for you. We are proud to have specialty trained physicians, therapists, and nurses. This interdisciplinary team consisting of a physician, rehab nurse, occupational therapist, physical therapist, speech-language pathologist, psychologists, neuropsychologist, case manager and dietician are available to address a multitude of special needs that impact patients and their loved ones after a stroke. The team will meet with you regularly to discuss your progress, update the rehabilitation plan, prepare for your discharge home and make recommendations and referrals for any continued services that may be necessary.

We are dedicated to providing you with the best possible outcome after a stroke. Our treatments will be based on current scientific evidence in the rehabilitation fields involved in your care. Our specially trained therapists, nurses, and physicians will ensure your recovery is maximized, and your return home is seamless. To assist with the transition home and for life after a stroke, we offer Stroke Support Groups. For more information about the Stroke Support Group at St. Catherine’s, please click here. Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic Therapy

The CHS Aquatic Therapy Program is a multifaceted program offered to both inpatients and outpatients as an adjunct to land-based treatment or as a primary treatment intervention. Aquatic therapy improves function through the application of aquatic therapeutic exercises.

Every Catholic Health Services Rehabilitation Hospital features a unique specialized centerpiece service: an indoor, temperature controlled Aquatic Center. These state of the art indoor pools allow therapists to use this unique environment to facilitate and augment traditional rehabilitation hospital treatments.

Our facilities offer the community aquatic programs which complement traditional rehabilitation approaches. State of the art pools and therapeutic interventions are utilized by physical and occupational therapists with specialty training.

The aquatic environment promotes the overall rehabilitation and personal fitness of an individual. Basic aquatic principles of buoyancy, resistance, and hydrostatic pressure are applied to the biomechanics of movement patterns.

Conditions which may benefit from aquatic therapy include but are not limited to:

  • Orthopedic conditions including fractures, joint replacement, amputations and soft tissue injuries
  • Neurological conditions inclusive of CVA, brain injury, Parkinson’s disease
  • Pain conditions and back injuries
  • Debility due to medical complications and /or disuse, atrophy.
  • Arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Geriatrics
  • Obesity
  • Mastectomy
  • Pre and Post Natal

Therapeutic Goals:

  • Improvement of cardiopulmonary fitness
  • Improvement in range of motion and muscle strength
  • Improvement in gait
  • Improvement in posture
  • Decrease in pain
  • Decrease in abnormal muscle tone
  • Reduction in tactile defensiveness/hypersensitivity
  • Improvement in balance, reaction time and safety during ambulation

Catholic Health Services’ Operation Fresh Start for Vets

Catholic Health Services supported Mission United and worked with NewsRadio610/WIOD, had organized a donation drive for basic household necessities for homeless veterans and their families who are transitioning to a home. On Veterans Day, November 11th, Catholic Health Services, Mission United and NewsRadio610 collected household items like towels, bedding, pots and pans, cleaning supplies and toiletries at the Harbor Shops in Ft Lauderdale.

Also, CHS volunteers working with Mission United sorted and packaged the donated household items into bags that will be given to the vets as they enter their new homes before the end of the year.

For over 30 years Catholic Health Services has proudly served our Veterans through Skilled Nursing, Medical Rehabilitation, Home Health Services, Specialty Medical Clinics and other Post-Acute Services. Catholic Health Services is committed to the principle that all people should live with dignity and is proud to partner with Mission United to assist our local Vets find a new start and fresh hope.

CHS teams up with Feeding South Florida Mobile Pantry Program

September is Hunger Awareness Month and Catholic Health Services teams up with Feeding South Florida by sponsoring a Mobile Pantry Program in Hialeah Gardens on Friday, September 5, 2014.

The Mobile Food Pantry is one of Feeding South Florida’s most innovative and effective ways to bring much needed fresh produce into areas that have been deemed food deserts. A food desert is an area in which a majority of the residents have limited access to large retail stores with fresh food and grocery products. The residents in these neighborhoods live below the federal poverty level, as determined by the United States Government. Through Feeding South Florida’s Mobile Food Pantry, individuals and families are able to access fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy, and bread that are so vital to maintaining a proper diet.

‘Team CHS’ distributed over 10, 000 pounds of food and fed over 300 families who are food insecure.  There are 871,920 food insecure individuals in South Florida alone.   Feeding South Florida (FSF) is part of the Feeding America network consisting of 202 food banks. FSF has the largest service area in Florida, serving 30% of the state’s food insecure population. FSF is the leading domestic hunger relief organization in South Florida, serving Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe Counties.

“It felt special being able to give back to our neighbors since St. Catherine’s West Rehabilitation Hospital is just a few blocks away from our distribution area.  It really hit home” stated Jaime Gonzalez, Administrator for St. Catherine’s Hospitals.

Catholic Health Services continues to look for ways to serve the community in keeping with our mission of providing care and services to those in need.  To learn more about Catholic Health Services, go towww.catholichealthservices.org.

CHS Rehab Hospitals Receive Exceptional Scores for 2013

(February 18, 2014, Lauderdale Lakes, FL) Officials at Catholic Health Services announced that in a report issued by UDS for 2013 medical rehabilitation outcome results, St. Catherine’s Rehabilitation Hospitals (North Miami and Hialeah Gardens) scored in the 88th percentile out of almost 800 facilities nationwide and St. Anthony’s Rehabilitation Hospital (Lauderdale Lakes) stands in the 97th percentile. The rankings were determined by UDSMR’s program evaluation model (PEM), a case mix-adjusted and severity-adjusted tool that provides facilities with a composite performance score and percentile ranking drawn from nearly three-quarters of all IRFs (inpatient rehabilitation facilities) in the country.

UDSMR’s PEM Report Card uses the indicators of efficiency and effectiveness contained in the Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility Patient Assessment Instrument (IRF-PAI), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ reporting tool for the Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility Prospective Payment System (IRF PPS).

“This year’s outstanding results demonstrate our team’s commitment to excellence. We continue to establish higher standards as each hospital gained several percentile points over last year’s already impressive performance. These numbers, once again, put our rehabilitation hospitals at the top of the field nationally and reinforce the dedication our staff exhibits to every patient we treat,” comments James Ball, COO for Catholic Health Services, as he speaks of the organization’s exceptional performance. “We are very proud of our professionals who devote themselves to improving the lives of our patients and celebrate this well-deserved recognition.”

The goal of the PEM Report Card is to recognize high performing rehabilitation hospitals for their delivery of quality patient care that is effective, efficient, timely, and patient-centered. Founded in 1988, UDSMR administers the world’s largest medical rehabilitation database, and its instruments provide the field with a common language and measurement tools for outcomes and functional assessment. CMS has adopted UDSMR’s FIM™ instrument as the basis for the IRF PPS, and UDSMR provides exclusive training and support to the agency.

Catholic Health Services has three stand-alone Rehabilitation Hospitals and one outpatient satellite facility. All rehabilitation hospitals, which have predominately private rooms, are equipped with modern, state-of-the-art technologies that enhance recovery and facilitate a return to prior levels of function among individuals with injuries, impairments and disabilities. St. Anthony’s Rehab Hospital restores hope and health in 19 year old man

John Bordalo was your typical 19 year old man, who enjoyed various athletic activities. On February 9, 2013, a day before he was enlisted to enter into the army, he came home from a day of football and surfing feeling exhausted and not being able to urinate. Like most of us, he just thought he was dehydrated so he drank more water but hours later his symptoms persisted. He went to an emergency center where they conducted various tests. He also complained of back pain and an inability to move his legs. This was thought to probably be from some medication he had been given. He went home and when he awoke the following morning, he still could not feel his legs. He then went to Northwest Medical Center and after an MRI he was diagnosed with transverse myelitis.
Transverse myelitis is a neurological disorder caused by inflammation across the spinal cord. Symptoms of transverse myelitis include a loss of spinal cord function over several hours to several weeks. What usually begins as a sudden onset of lower back pain, muscle weakness, or abnormal sensations in the toes and feet can rapidly progress to more severe symptoms, including paralysis, urinary retention, and loss of bowel control. Transverse myelitis occurs in adults and children, in both genders, and in all ethnicities. Researchers are uncertain of the exact causes of transverse myelitis, but it often develops following viral infections.
John was admitted to St. Anthony’s Rehabilitation Hospital as a paraplegic. With intensive rehabilitation including electrical stimulation and aquatics, John has made a miraculous recovery. “John is on the road to full recovery, he is a very determined young man” states Jorge Casauay, Director of Rehabilitation at St. Anthony’s Rehabilitation Hospital. “I consider him one of our best success stories!” After only three weeks of rehabilitation from Jennifer Beasley, PT, Jenna Denning, PT and Taneshia Lightfoot, OT, John will be walking out the door to go home. “The staff and services at St. Anthony’s Rehabilitation Hospital are truly amazing. With the help from the therapists and the aquatic center, I have been given my legs and my life back.”
John took part in the financial assistance program that Catholic Health Services provides to the community. Catholic Health Services has contributed over $11 million in community benefit in the fiscal year 2012 to the communities it serves in Broward and Miami-Dade counties in south Florida. John will continue his outpatient rehabilitation at St. Anthony’s and is taking his recovery “day by day”.
St. Anthony’s Rehabilitation Hospital, part of Catholic Health Services, is a free-standing, acute medical rehabilitation hospital in Lauderdale Lakes. The hospital consistently achieves exceptionally high outcomes and according to the Uniform Data Systems annual report, it is presently ranked in the top 7% of 800 participating rehabilitation hospitals in nationwide.
